FAQ

What vacuum system is this designed for?

Dust collectors (not wet dry vacs or dust extractors) that have at least a 4-inch inlet. The general rule of thumb is the larger the horsepower, CFM and static pressure, the more debris pickup you'll get at the end of the Boom Arm's dust hood.

Can I pick up an extra mount, so that I could move my Boom Arm from spot to spot?

Absolutely. We recommend the Wall Mount Combo that comes the wall mount, pipe insert and lock collar. That way you just have to remove the Boom Arm's first pivot when jumping it over. Alternatively, though, you can pick up the individual items in the combo as well.

What pipe does the 4-inch Boom Arm take?

It comes with custom, thin-wall pipe designed to be lightweight yet still rigid and durable. We offer more of it here. But you can also pick up 4-inch irrigation or S&D pipe at your local hardware store. Just confirm it has an OD of 4.215 inches, which is a standard dimension.

Can I get a bigger dust hood?

While we don't offer one, you can search for larger 4-inch dust hoods on the market. In order to maximize suction, we like to get as close to the action as possible with our low-profile hood. If you go bigger, think of it more as a funnel deflecting debris towards the vacuum source, as the vacuum suction will be too low to pull debris into the larger hood.

Will the 4-inch Boom Arm connect to my Mullet High-Speed Cyclone?

No, the 4-inch Boom Arm is designed for 4-inch (or larger) systems. Instead, check out our 2-inch Boom Arm.

Will this pick up the chips while I turn or power carve?

Large debris traveling fast away from the Boom Arm's dust hood is really tough to redirect. Generally, your vacuum source just won't have enough suction to change its path. Think of the Boom Arm more for sanding operations where fine debris wants to waft in the air and settle on other surfaces. Or position the hood in the path of the larger debris to work as a deflector funneling into the Boom Arm's ducting.

Could I mount the Boom Arm to my lathe?

Sure, you have a couple of options:

  1. Drill holes into the metal legs of your stand and attach the included mount directly to it with bolts/nuts (not included)
  2. Attach a board to your lathe stand and affix the mount to the board
  3. Attach to the wall behind your lathe
  4. Attach to the ceiling above your lathe
What about fume extraction -- how would this work for that?

Yes, fumes are easy to pull away due to the lightweight particles found in smoke. Of course, never vacuum up hot ash or embers. And you'll want to consider a carbon or charcoal filter potentially on a smaller dust collector, as too high of air speeds could push the small fume particles through the filter.
